With recent publications on Hip Hop history being released all over the world at the moment, Andrew Emery has found a niche that is often overlooked in the image of the artist, that of the cover art.

However if the cover of the book where to be the same as a CD or LP we would instantly say its wack on first site, however it’s the content that really inspires. What do they say about never judge a book by its cover?

With contents titles such as: When shoelaces where fat – Old school 1978 –1984, and Shine and stars: The Jiggy Era 2000 – Present, its not hard to conceptualise that there has been a bit of research in this to get things just right.

Some cover art is iconic. Someone say… Beat Street, Fear of A Black Planet, Midnight Marauders, Things Fall Apart or Tommy Boys Greatest Hits? Others are just damn embarrassing, or poorly executed. Say for example MC Lyte’s first LP. If you did not hear the album you could be forgiven for thinking one of the guys on the cover was the MC! Also check out Dre in a tight suit that looks to be knitted out of white plastic bags when he was with the World Class Wreckin Cru. One word: Dodgy.

Also, Trying to work out if your album is a bootleg or not? While this may not answer all your questions, at least it shows if they got the photo or artwork on the front right when they copied it!
