Hip Hop has made me incredibly happy this
week. The power of a live show is one of the
most incredible things about our culture and
is such a strong reminder of how amazing solid
hip hop can be. Seeing the artists enjoy the
show as much as the crowd makes it even more
unbelievable.
For those that don’t know what I’m
talking about, I’m talking about Rahzel
& JS1. Holding it down for the Rock Steady
crew, hailing from the Big Apple and bringing
Australia one of the tightest & most pure
hip hop sets we have been blessed with. You
might have caught them at Bugg’n but if
you didn’t see him at the Prince you haven’t
seen them at their best. they did the show and
more, more reggae, more beat boxing, more hip
hop and more Rahzel.
Dropping Jay Z classic Dirt off your shoulder
as well as Terror Squad’s Lean Back, Rahzel
didn’t stop at the beat & the chorus.
The beat, the chorus, the verse & the bass
were all dropped into his renditions of Snoop
& Pharell’s Drop It Like It’s
Hot and the White Stripes Seven Nation Army.
Why? Because anything JS can do, he can do better.
Highlights for me were If Your Mother Only
Knew, as it’s his own track he just absolutely
kills it every time he drops it. The classic
You Don’t Love Me (no no no) by Dawn Penn
has always been a favourite with me and he made
sound smooth as silk.
Roses for the ladies, Respect for the fellas
and the coolest hat I have ever seen made this
night as memorable as buying your first record.
Once again my faith in hip hop has been restored.
Despite all this, a collection of words on
a page will never compare to the feeling of
witnessing solid hip hop like this. If you weren’t
planning on catching them, catch them. Rahzel
is one of the most talented & kind performers
you will ever be lucky enough to see with one
of the most talented, real hip hop deejays around.
Even if they did think we were all riding Kangaroos
and shit.
