Built in the posse cut tradition of Wu-Tang
and Juice crews, Army of the Pharaohs is a clique
of some of the US underground’s finest
players, seeking to take back the rugged, raw
and solid sounds of the New York hip hop 90’s.
Spearheaded by Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks
fame, artists include Apathy, Celph Titled,
7L & Esoteric, Chief Kamanchi, Crypt the
Warchild & Planetary, Reef the Loast Cauze,
King Syze, Des Devious & Faez One. Despite
their penchant for substituting ‘s’
with ‘z’ and some seemingly ridiculous
mc titles, the long awaited debut The Torture
Papers is an absolute banger.
Highlights are Battle Cry where we get an all
out, six minute, fuck the hook posse track like
no other, Tear It Down is beyond ill where a
beat from Loptimist takes us right back to the
golden age. Paz, Chief Kamanchi & Esoteric
were the standouts whilst Celph Titled’s
battlecat one liners sound unbefitting to say
the least. A solid debut from a group of hardcore
artists that’s not to be missed.
